Treatment of abdominal aortic aneurisms

The abdominal aorta is a central blood vessel located in the posterior part of the abdominal cavity. For some people, as they advance with age, this blood vessel widens, and in some cases swells to such large dimensions that is seems like a balloon about to burst.

This is a dangerous and life threatening situation. To prevent this complication surgery to replace the damaged vessel with a synthetic replacement tube is recommended.

Rate of success and adverse effects

The rate of serious complication as a result of this procedure is 3-5%. The serious complications include myocardial infarct, stroke, and damage to blood supply to important internal organs. Additional diseases, such as coronary or lung diseases increase the risk rates.
